A Room of One's Own (Online film screening)
In partnership with The Royal Society of Literature and in celebration of their annual Dalloway Day, catch our tribute to Virginia Woolf’s other great iconic work, A Room of One’s Own.
Woolf’s 1928 feminist polemic explores the silence and erasure of women's voices from literature throughout the centuries and considers the conditions a writer needs to thrive and become great. Funny, sharp and insightful, it is a powerful call for women's creative and intellectual freedom.
Originally made for the London Library Lit Fest in May 2021 and filmed in the atmospheric spaces of The London Library, where Woolf, a long-standing member, would once have browsed the book stacks, Charlotte Westenra directs actors Nina Sosanya, Colin Tierney and Sophie Melville in Linda Marshall-Griffiths’ stunning dramatic adaptation of this ground-breaking work, which still resonates today.
Specially discounted for Dalloway Day, the film will be available to watch online anytime between 6pm on 14 June and 12 midday on 17th June through YouTube.

Linda Marshall-Griffiths is a playwright for theatre and sound. Her recent work includes The Secret Garden (Leeds Playhouse, 2022), No Place but the Water (a podcast for BBC Sounds), The Invisible (Radio 3) and the award-winning The Sky is Wider, an experiment in sound.
Charlotte Westenra is an Olivier Award-winning stage director and dramaturg specialising in political theatre and new writing. Her most recent productions are The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (Southwark Playhouse) and On Hostile Ground (Royal & Derngate).
The RSL, founded in 1820, is the UK’s charity for the advancement of literature, acting as a voice for the value of literature, engaging people in appreciating literature, and encouraging and honouring writers. And Dalloway Day is a whole day dedicated to the celebration of one of the 20th Century’s most important novels. Set on ‘a Wednesday in mid-June’, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway (like James Joyce’s Ulysses) takes place over the course of a single day. Following Elaine Showalter’s 2016 call for a Dalloway Day to celebrate Virginia Woolf’s work, influence and legacy, the RSL and partners seek to make Virginia Woolf and Mrs Dalloway to London what James Joyce and Ulysses are to Dublin with ‘Bloomsday’. This year's Dalloway Day takes place on 15th June 2022 and will include workshops, online and in person events, reimagining and examining Woolf's work in a contemporary context.
