Walking Tour: Bram Stoker and the Creation of Dracula

Venue: Start at The Lyceum
To tie in with Creation Theatre’s production of Dracula at The London Library, tour guide Anthony Davis leads this walk tracing Bram Stoker’s steps as he conceived one of the most iconic stories in literature.
Everyone has heard of Dracula, but his creator, Bram Stoker, is much less familiar. This is a walk through London’s West End, introducing the story of Stoker’s life through the places and people he knew and was influenced by – a remarkable range from Oscar Wilde to WS Gilbert and Arthur Conan Doyle among others.
Starting at the Lyceum Theatre where Stoker worked, we explore Stoker’s own vampiric relationship with Sir Henry Irving, the great actor who was probably one of the models for the blood-sucking Count. We’ll hear about the later history of the book on stage and screen plus a real life murder, the front door of a secret society and a dark alley where we learn the sinister influence of gas lighting.
The walk finishes at the London Library, where Stoker researched the history of vampirism, and there will be an opportunity to see his annotations in some of the books he used.
