Windrush Women (Online)

Venue: Online
H V Joshua, one of Jacaranda Books’ #TwentyIn2020 authors, speaks to Magdalene Abraha about A Circle of Five, an important new history which sheds light on the lived experience of the Windrush generation.
Transcribed from interviews conducted by H V Joshua, A Circle of Five is the testimony of five ordinary women. Following their individual journeys from the Caribbean to building new lives in the UK, this is a unique insight into the challenges of immigration and assimilation within an often hostile and ever-shifting cultural and political landscape.
H V Joshua was a member of the Social Science Council Research Unit on Ethnic Relations and lead author of To Ride the Storm – The 1980 Bristol Riot and the State. He was Assistant Chief Executive at Nottingham City Council as well as Director of the Institute for Community Cohesion before becoming a writer full time.
Magdalene Abraha is a writer and publisher. She was awarded the 2020 LBF Trailblazer award for her contribution to publishing and was a Bookseller Rising Star 2019. She is also the creator of the viral book series ‘A Quick Ting On’ published by Jacaranda Books.
#TwentyIn2020 is a ground breaking initiative which has seen Jacaranda Books publishing 20 titles by 20 Black British writers in one year across adult fiction, nonfiction and poetry. The initiative is in collaboration with Words of Colour and in partnership with The London Library.
