Accessibility

The members' entrance in Mason's Yard provides level entry to the building with a platform lift inside for wheelchair access (weight limit 250kg). Entry is via two automatic doors:  the outer door opens on approach to the building, while the inner door is released by your membership card. 

Trained staff are on hand to assist with operation of the platform lift if required.   2 wheelchair-accessible lifts (630kg weight limit) between them serve all reading rooms and the majority of floors in the Central Stack, St James’s Building, and T.S. Eliot House.

The St James's Square entrance is reached by 6 steps and is not wheelchair accessible. 

Some older parts of the building are difficult to access for those with mobility constraints, with narrow aisles between the shelves and grated floors, but staff will retrieve material on request and provide assistance.

The main reading rooms are accessible and have desks of different heights.  There are two electric, adjustable-height desks in the Art Reading Room. 

Specific reader spaces or areas may be booked in advance for those with access-related needs.  

• Portable induction loop at Reception and in the New Room. 
• Accessible toilet in the basement reached via the main lift.
• Video screen reader available for those with visual impairments. 
• Magnifying glasses available on request. 

If you believe you will need support to evacuate the building in the case of an emergency, please speak to staff at Reception and a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan can be completed.

The fire alarm is a spoken message that can be heard across the building.

In the event of the fire alarm sounding, please follow the signs to the nearest fire exit and evacuate the building immediately, or wait at the nearest refuge point and use the call button to alert staff to your location.

The London Library is committed to ensuring an inclusive and accessible environment for all its members and visitors. In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, individuals accompanied by trained assistance dogs are welcome in all accessible areas of the Library.

An assistance dog is trained to perform specific tasks to support a person with a disability or medical condition. This includes, but is not limited to, guide dogs, hearing dogs, medical alert dogs, and mobility support dogs. These animals are not pets, they are essential aids.

Other animals, including emotional support, therapeutic, or companion animals, are not permitted on the premises. For more details please see the Library’s Assistance Dogs policy. 

Pay and display parking spaces in St James's Square are in operation Monday to Saturday 8.30am-6.30pm.
