Story & Heritage
The London Library opened above a shop in Pall Mall with 382 founding members and 2,000 books. Nearly two centuries later, from its current home in St James's Square, the Library has around 7,500 members and houses one million volumes, nearly all of which is available for members to browse, borrow and discover. Discover the history and heritage of the Library and how it has helped shape literature for 185 years.
Inside the Library
In the very heart of London, The London Library offers beautiful, atmospheric spaces to read, write, research and be inspired. Choose from 160 desks across five reading rooms, from grand, book-lined interiors to quiet corners tucked among 17 miles of bookstacks. Members can browse the shelves freely and spend a couple of hours or an entire day, with WiFi available throughout the building.

Organised alphabetically by subject, books from 1700 onwards sit side by side on open shelves, allowing readers to trace the development of ideas and discover connections across time periods, disciplines and generations. Supporting early-career writers, The London Library Emerging Writers Programme is a unique opportunity offering masterclasses, peer support, networking opportunities and one year's free membership to the Library and its extensive collection.
Learning & Participation
Our Learning & Participation Programme is designed to introduce individuals to the Library and its rich history, collection and spaces and to inspire an interest in writing and reading. Sessions are run in partnership with a range of schools and charitable organisations and funded by donations and grants.
