Write & Shine: Ways of Seeing – Martha Gellhorn (Online)

Start your day with a burst of creativity!

Join Write & Shine bright and early, live from The London Library for a 90-minute virtual writing workshop workshop inspired by American novelist, travel writer, and journalist Martha Gellhorn. Renowned as a war correspondent and a committed humanitarian, she spent her writing and bearing witness.

A London Library member from 1974, Gellhorn (1908-98), reported on many major world conflicts during her 60-year career. She was among the first journalists to report from Dachau concentration camp after it was liberated in 1945. In this workshop, we’ll read extracts of Gellhorn’s work, considering how her courage and clarity in life and on the page might inspire our own writing.

This workshop is part of a series of morning writing sessions, led by author Gemma Seltzer, exploring the connections between image, writing and seeing in the work of former members of The London Library, as inspired by John Berger’s seminal book Ways of Seeing.

Write & Shine workshops takes place in the early morning light - the best time to think, dream and imagine! You won’t be expected to share your writing, which offers great freedom and encourages all kinds of fascinating ideas to emerge.

Login at 7.30am for 7.45am start. You will be sent a Zoom link a few days before the workshop (if you do not receive it, please check your junk file or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
