Howard Davies was appointed Chairman of The London Library Trustees on 3 November 2015. He was appointed Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland on 1 September 2015. He recently chaired the UK Airports Commission and was the Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science from 2003 until May 2011. Prior to this appointment Howard chaired the UK Financial Services Authority from 1997 to 2003 and was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, after three years as the Director General of the Confederation of British Industry.

Howard is also a Professor of Practice at the French School of Political Science in Paris (Sciences Po).

Howard has published five books focused on the financial markets and regularly writes for The Financial Times, The Times Literary Supplement and Management Today. He chaired the Man Booker Prize judges in 2007.

Member since 2002. Philip Broadley was appointed Treasurer on 9 November 2016. Philip chairs the audit committee of Legal & General Group plc. Previously he was Group Finance Director of Prudential plc from 2000 until 2008; and of Old Mutual plc from 2008 until 2014. He was a partner at Arthur Andersen from 1993 to 2000. He has been Chairman of the 100 Group of Finance Directors. He is a member of the Code Committee of the UK Takeover Panel and of the Oxford University Audit and Scrutiny Committee. Philip has a MSc in Behavioural Science from LSE and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from St Edmund Hall Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.


Isabelle Dupuy: Trustee (2016– )

Member since 2002. Originally from Haiti, Isabelle graduated from Yale University with a BA in Literature in 1992 and moved to London in 1998 as a trader with Merrill Lynch. She wrote the screen adaptation for The Paris Wife (2013) for Amber Entertainment and is currently writing a novel called Living the Dream. Isabelle is signed with the Blake Friedmann agency.

Member since 2003. BA in English at the University of Nottingham. Career in marketing since the 1990s, including at O2 (2000-2003), the Conservative Party (2003-2004), Nokia (2007-2012) and becoming CEO of Mission Media (with offices in London, New York, San Francisco and Singapore) in 2014. Since 2014 has been a Non-Executive Director/Trustee of Nottingham Trent University. Also a columnist at Marketing Magazine and a trustee of the Tilford Institute in Farnham, one of Sir Edwin Lutyens’ earliest commissions. Took a sabbatical in 2002 to write a book and keen to return to full-time writing when circumstances permit.

Member since 2013.  Canadian/US citizen now living in London. Educated at Wellesley College (undergraduate degree in French) and graduate of the Getty Leadership Institute’s Museum Leadership programme (MLI), with an MA in Connoisseurship and the Art & Auction Market from Christie’s Education, New York, and, more recently, an MA in Art & Archaeology (Asian Art) from SOAS. Spent 17 years on Wall Street (1981-1998) as an internal auditor and later as a compliance director and supervisory principal specialising in regulatory compliance and internal control issues, ending as a Managing Director in Fixed Income Compliance at Bear, Stearns. Subsequently moved into museum administration and served as Managing Director of the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum in Las Vegas from 2003 to 2008 before serving as Managing Director of the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, a newly built $235m Platinum LEED certified cultural and educational attraction. Author of Bringing Heaven to Earth: Chinese Silver Jewellery and Ornament in the Late Qing Dynasty, Ianthe Press, London 2016 in association with Paul Holberton Publishing.

Served as Trustee 2011-2015 and re-elected at 2015 AGM. Philip Hook is a board member of Sotheby's Europe and a novelist and writer about art. He has been a member of the London Library since 1988. He began his career in the Old Master Department at Christie's in 1974, and set up an international art dealership in St James's in 1987. He joined Sotheby's in 1994 and is now senior director of the Impressionist and Modern art department. He appeared for 20 years as picture expert on BBC TV's Antiques Roadshow. He has published five novels and four works of art history, the most recent of which are Breakfast at Sotheby’s, an A-Z of the Art World (2013), and Rogues’ Gallery, A History of Art and its Dealers (2017).

Member since 2009. Educated at Sherborne and New College, Oxford (1st in History and Modern Languages). Pursued career in shipping and financial markets, starting in Asia then in London. Founder and Managing Director of LawShare Ltd (1991-2005) and of Heartwood (CEO 1988-2008, Chairman 2009-2013). Author, No More Champagne: Churchill and His Money; lecturer. Trustee, Haberdashers' Aske's Federation of Academies (schools), Skyrme Hart Charitable Trust (youth and music). Joined the Founders’ Circle in 2013.

Member since March 2007. Educated at Worth Abbey School and the University of Surrey (BSc in Mathematics 1971), before spending five years at Deloitte & Co, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1974. Anthony has over twenty years’ experience at Baring Brothers (merchant bankers) including more than ten at director level, followed by three years as Global Head of Corporate Finance at Robert Fleming (investment bankers). After retirement he spent seven years (2001-2008) as Treasurer and Trustee of the King’s Fund, chairing both the Audit Committee and the Investment Committee with over £100m funds under management. He also undertook further study at the Open University, obtaining a BA in Humanities with Art History in 2003 and an MA in Art History in 2007. He completed a PhD in Art History at Sussex University in 2012.

Member since 1994 and a very active user. Author of many books, all of them researched and written at the Library. Published titles include Russian Roulette, Paradise Lost: Smyrna 1922, Samurai William, White Gold and Nathaniel’s Nutmeg (currently under option by River One Productions, New York). His latest book, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, was published by John Murray in June, 2016. It is currently under option with an American TV production company. He is currently working on the history of D-Day, to be published simultaneously in the UK, USA and France in 2019, for the 75th anniversary.

Member since May 2013. Educated at St Paul’s Girls’ School and Exeter College, Oxford (BA in English 2000), obtaining scholarships for both institutions. Currently Head of Marketing at Harrods, she has spent the last ten years in brand and business development in the consumer and retail sector for companies as diverse as Anya Hindmarch, Britvic and Bupa. She began her career as a style journalist for The Telegraph then co-founded East Beach Cafe in West Sussex, designed by Thomas Heatherwick CBE.

Sir Andrew read Classics and Law at Downing College Cambridge, and following a career as a commercial barrister became a High Court Judge in October 2011.  He has been a member of the Library since 2008 and regularly uses it as a browsing and lending library.  He has served on a number of governing bodies or committees of charitable and non-charitable organisations.  He is married to a dermatologist, has three moderately grown up children and has still not written his first novel.


David Reade QC: Trustee (2012– )

David has been a member of the Library since 1987. He is a barrister who graduated from Birmingham University and was then called to the Bar by the Middle Temple. Following a brief period as a lecturer he began practising in London. He now mainly practises in employment and commercial law and was appointed as a Queen’s Counsel in 2006. He was made a Bencher of Middle Temple in 2009. David additionally works as a mediator with experience of mediating a wide variety of disputes.

Peter is a chartered architect. After training at the University of Cambridge and Central London Polytechnic, he spent 15 years in private practice. From 1997 he worked at the Royal Fine Art Commission and then its successor the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE). Since 2005 he has been the principal of a practice which provides advice on architecture, urbanism, conservation and planning.  His blog on these subjects, ‘The gutter and the stars’, can be found at pscpa.blogspot.co.uk.  He has been a member of the Library since 2010.

Member since 1994 and a frequent visitor to the Library. Educated at University College Oxford. A BAFTA and Emmy nominated film producer, director and writer with substantial experience in theatre and television. The author of six published works of non-fiction including The Book of the Moon, The Phantom Army of Alamein and Kidnap in Crete which is in development as a feature film. His next book, Lonely Courage, about the women of the SOE, is scheduled for publication in the spring of 2017. Has recently completed a term as Chairman of the Chelsea Arts Club.

Member since 1993.  Read Classics and Modern Languages at Oxford.  Full-time writer of literary non-fiction, including the best-selling Terra Incognita: Travels in Antarctica (1996), Travels in a Thin Country: a Journey through Chile (1994), Cherry: a Life of Apsley Cherry-Gerrard (2001), Too Close to the Sun: the Audacious Life of Denys Finch Hatton (2006), Evia: Travels on an Undiscovered Greek Island (2007), The Magnetic North: Notes from the Arctic Circle (2009), Access All Areas: Selected Writings, 1990-2010 (2011), and most recently O My America!: Second Acts in a New World (2013).  Her works have been translated into many languages and she is a regular contributor to broadsheet newspapers in the UK and US and occasionally broadcasts on Radio 4. Fellow and former Council Member of the Royal Society of Literature. Trustee of the London Library, 2005-2009, serving on the Development Committee and Nominations Committee. Was a member of the Chairmanship Search committee in 2008-2009. Has continued to be a regular user of - and active ambassador for - the Library.
