Member since 1993. Read Classics and Modern Languages at Oxford. Full-time writer of literary non-fiction, including the best-selling Terra Incognita: Travels in Antarctica (1996), Travels in a Thin Country: a Journey through Chile (1994), Cherry: a Life of Apsley Cherry-Gerrard (2001), Too close to the Sun: the Audacious Life of Denys Finch Hatton (2006), Evia: Travels on an Undiscovered Greek Island (2007), The Magnetic North: Notes from the Arctic Circle (2009), Access All Areas: Selected Writings, 1990-2010, and most recently O My America!: Second Acts in a New World. Her works have been translated into many languages and she is a regular contributor to broadsheet newspapers in the UK and US and occasionally broadcasts on Radio 4. Fellow and former Council Member of the Royal Society of Literature. Trustee of the London Library, 2005-2009, serving on the Development Committee and Nominations Committee. Was a member of the Chairmanship search committee in 2008-2009. Has continued to be a regular user of - and active ambassador for - the Library.
