PHASE TWO OVERVIEW

Phase 2 redevelopment new facilities for members

 

The following facilities are now fully available to members:

 

  • New enlarged wheelchair accessible Lift – serving the Basement to Floor 6 as before, but with additional stops at the Times Room (lift button B) and Art Room (lift button GA)
  • Extended central staircase – now running from the Ground to the 6th floors
  • Direct access to T S Eliot House on 5 levels

 

In the Basement (accessible by lift by pressing the lift button B)

 

  • The new Lightwell Reading Room - containing 10 new reader desks, WiFi access and power for laptop users, individual task lights, and quick and easy access to the Library’s periodicals collection.
  • The united Periodicals collection brought together for the first time on a single floor
  • New basement toilets including a disabled toilet, designed by the artist Martin Creed.
  • The Times Room – with purpose designed lecterns for easy consultation of materials
  • An additional 5 new reader spaces distributed around the Basement

 

On the Ground Floor

 

  • A refurbished and extended Reception area and Circulation Desk (issues and returns)
  • New Enquiries Desk and Membership Office
  • New accessible Mason’s Yard entrance with platform lift for wheelchair access
  • Extended cloakroom provision – with 70 new members lockers
  • An extended Catalogue Hall – with more catalogue terminals, additional space for the Guard Books, internet access and an overhead digital scanner
  • The re-furbished Art Room – on 2 levels with an additional 4 reader spaces in the gallery area

 

On the First Floor

 

  • The Prevost Reading Room – originally the trustees’ meeting room, now offers members 15 additional WiFi enabled reader spaces

 

As part of the project book moves involving nearly 14km of books and periodicals have taken place. We thank members for their patience during this phase of the development project.
