Since its foundation the Library has collected and bound academic journals and publications of a remarkable range of learned societies both in the UK and abroad. Additionally a wide range of periodicals of cultural, social and political interest are taken, with the current collection exceeding 750 titles and extensive back runs for over 2500 further titles many of which began in the 18th century. As well as print copies the Library subscribes to over 200 online versions of its journals, augmented with access to the online periodicals archive JSTOR (offering access to over 1000 titles). For further details see the e-library.
Current issues of journals are displayed in the Reading Room and remain there until superseded. All journals are bound at the end of the year and then most become available for loan from the Periodicals collection located in the Basement. Not all journals and learned society titles follow this general pattern but staff will happily assist with queries.
The full list of periodical holdings including learned society publications is in preparation. The retrospective cataloguing project is continually adding such titles to the online catalogue. If you cannot find the title you want or need any assistance please check with the Enquiries Desk
